In 1983 Popda Society purchased an investment property, a large Victorian house at Corporation Street which was we subsequently turned into 3 separate self-contained flats. The cost being £9,290, which has a current existing use value of over £230k and yields an annual income of circa £20k.
The funds raised was a collective effort across the UK and during a visit of South Africa Yusuf Muhammed Ravat brought back a considerable amounts towards the purchase price. All members gave a lot of time and effort for the house to be purchased.
Income from the flats, as Anjuman funds, has subsequently been used to maintain the Masjid and other facilities in Popda, like the upkeep of the graveyard and generate surpluses.
In 1995 the Popda Society was formally registered with the Charity Commission.
In the mid 1980s land in Palfrey was purchased from Walsall Council at a cost of £37,215 inclusive of fees.
The site was subsequently used to establish a community centre, the Palfrey Access Centre (PAC) which was officially opened in 2001 and focussed on economic and social regeneration, training activities, ICT and serving the needs of the local community in Palfrey and adjacent localities.
The PAC was developed using 3 sources of capital grants and finance: Advantage West Midlands (now incorporated into Homes England), SRB Walsall Council & The Popda Society providing the land). The build cost was just shy of £500k.
